::Sejva – We Only Want To Be Bad::
Leading a path back to the early days of Exploited Club, this second release on the label from Atlanta-based Diynamic / VOD / TAU artist oozes old skool electro flavour from every pore—and it tastes delicious.
‘We Only Want To Be Bad’ leads the charge, flexing Hi-NRG muscle with its off-beat bassline, snazzy melodies and campy vocals. The breakdown takes things into a more heavenly space before we slam down into the hard-funking groove, ethereal vox synths and jaunty chord sequences. A masterclass in retro revivalism.
‘Song & Dance’ has shades of early Erlend Øye or Nicolas Jaar in its mysterious and pared-back vocal stylings, while rubbery bass funk and squelchy synths continue the Hi-NRG feel. ‘Brain Dead’ is a sexxxy little number, all propulsive electro funk, squealing synths and deliciously groovy bass. The bugged-out vocals fit perfectly with the retro-futuristic darkness of the synth pads and vibrato leads. ‘Lie To Me (Alt Mix)’ is the cherry on the cake, where a stomping breakbeat rhythm jostles with cool melody, distorted guitar-like fuzz and effortless vocals. The twists and turns in the composition, slick production and myriad synth parts make it an addictive listen.
