“Faceless stars aren’t exactly a new phenomenon in the world of electronic music. In fact, anonymity is the hallmark of some of the scene’s biggest artists—take Daft Punk, The Bloody Beetroots, and Burial just for starters. Add Claptone to the list, as this unidentified combo hit the world of disco-tinged deep house hard this spring with their cover of the Wu-Tang Clan classic ”Cream.” The tune climbed up the Beatport charts and made its way onto the hard drives of star DJs including Tensnake, A-Trak, and Matthew Dear. Their latest, “Night On Fire,” which drops June 11th on Beatport, promises similar results by borrowing Jim Morrison’s most famous verse and wrapping it in brooding keys and swaying disco rhythms.
But where the Exploited act stands out, besides having a penchant for covers, is in their videos—each one suggesting a taste for B-movie artfulness, like an 8mm film version of iamamiwhoami‘s HD enigma.
